ITBS
The Iowa Test of Basic Skills or ITBS is an example of a summative assessment. This test is given to children in grades kindergarten – 8th and are written in levels from 5-14. There are content pieces with various sections that measure specific skills. In levels 5-8 (K-2nd grade) some of the specific sections include: vocabulary, comprehension, listening, language, math, social studies, and science. And, in sections 9-14 (3rd-8th grade) some of the specific skills
measured include: vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, math concepts and estimation, math computation, maps and diagrams, and more.
The ITBS is given to gain information about students and their abilities, and in order for teachers to plan effective lessons for their classes. It is also given to track individual student and school progress.
